annual survey of last year's graduates done by her office found that
the mean salary for nursing majors was $56,000;
for computer science, $49,000;
education, $36,350; psychology, $32,500; and English, $30,000.
"The biggest change is students who started college four or five
years ago, when everything seemed to be wonderful and people were
starting at dot-coms with incredible salaries, $60,000, $70,000,
sometimes with signing bonuses," she said.
"But now things are very different. It's understandable when you're
21 and have never lived through such circumstances and you're
feeling discouraged.
You feel the rug was pulled out from under you.
Our job as career services people is to get
into their face and remind them and they need to take an active part
in their future."
