Introduction

This course is to provide Microsoft® Windows NT® 4.0 support professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to support Microsoft Windows® 2000–based networks. This is a performance-based course, designed around the job-related tasks a support professional must perform using new or modified features in the Windows 2000 operating system.

At Course Completion

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Install Windows 2000 and describe tools used for unattended installations.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot the DNS Server Service.
  • Explain the relationship between Active Directory structure and network organization.
  • Install and configure Active Directory in a network.
  • Populate Active Directory and manage Active Directory objects.
  • Upgrade a Windows NT 4.0 network to Windows 2000.
  • Install and configure RIS.
  • Deploy RIS images to workstations.
  • Manage desktop environments by using Group Policy.
  • Manage software by using Group Policy.
  • Install and configure Terminal Services.
  • Configure and support Routing and Remote Access in Windows 2000.
  • Configure smart cards, security policy, Internet Protocol Security, and the Encrypting File System.
  • Support DHCP and WINS in Windows 2000.

Prerequisites

Course 803—Administering Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, or equivalent skills and knowledge including:

  • Creating and administering user and group accounts.
  • Troubleshooting problems that prevent users from logging on to a network; managing network resources.
  • Setting up and administering permissions for files and folders.
  • Taking ownership of folders.
  • Troubleshooting when users are unable to gain access to disk resources.
  • Setting up a printing environment.
  • Administering printers.
  • Troubleshooting printing problems.
  • Monitoring network resources.
  • Backing up and restoring files and folders.
  • Administering the Windows NT Server and Windows NT Workstation operating systems in real-world situations.

Course 922—Supporting Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Core Technologies, or equivalent skills and knowledge including:

  • Installing and configuring Windows NT.
  • Creating and implementing system policies.
  • Creating and managing partitions, file systems, and fault-tolerant volumes.
  • Supporting running applications under Windows NT.
  • Identifying network components and describing their function on a Windows NT–based computer.
  • Installing and configuring network transport protocols.
  • Installing and configuring network services on Windows NT Server.
  • Implementing remote access service (RAS).
  • Installing client software.
  • Implementing and troubleshooting directory replication.
  • Recognizing problems related to the boot process.
  • Determining the appropriate action to take for common problems.

Additional Prerequisites:

  • A thorough understanding of DHCP, WINS, and Internet Protocol (IP) subnetting and routing.
  • Experience supporting networks and end users.

The course materials, lectures, and lab exercises are in English. To benefit fully from the instruction, students need an understanding of the English language and completion of the prerequisites.
